Matt Mercer, prolific voice actor and dungeon master dynamo, has confirmed that he is the English voice actor for Vincent Valentine in the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth! He made the announcement at the start of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth panel at New York Comic Con 2023.
Mercer is a mainstay in the gaming industry, having lent his acting talent to some of the biggest games in the modern era. With the actor behind Cole Cassidy in Overwatch and Minsc in the recently released Baldur’s Gate III confirming he’s joining the already-outstanding English voice cast of Rebirth, sleuthy Final Fantasy fans can celebrate feeling vindicated. Many in the community called out Mercer as the likely voice of Vincent Valentine after hearing the character’s voice for the first time in the latest Rebirth trailer.
A crazed fan of Final Fantasy VII himself, during the panel, Mercer also shared the story of how he discovered he earned the role. Square Enix sent for Mercer to record some secondary roles nine months after auditioning for the role of Valentine. While recording, Mercer, totally unaware, is surprised with a video of Vincent Valentine revealing the role was his.
This special New York Comic Con panel also featured other members of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth cast, including Cody Christian (Cloud), John Bentley (Barret), Britt Baron (Tifa), Max Mittelman (Red XIII), and Suzie Yeung (Yuffie). Briana White, the voice of Aerith, could not attend the panel but did make a surprise video appearance.
