Back in May, the Final Fantasy XIV team announced Shadow, a new European Data Center being added to help mitigate login congestion during the Dawntrail launch period. Today, it’s been announced that Shadow and its probational worlds will be retired on August 27.

According to the Lodestone announcement, Data Center Travel to any of the listed probational worlds will be disabled on Thursday, August 15, and visiting players are being encouraged to return to their homeworlds before the Shadow Data Center’s closure near the end of the month. If you forget to return or are unable to, no worries, straggling Warriors of Light will automatically be returned to their home worlds at the end of the scheduled maintenance period.
Login and server congestion was a major concern for the FFXIV team leading up to the July 2 launch of Dawntrail. The creation of the probational Shadow Data Center and other initiatives they championed to alleviate the strain of swarms of eager players logging in at once seems to have worked. More than a month after launch and Dawntrail hasn’t experienced the sort of player login woes and frustrations that afflicted the launch of the previous expansion, Endwalker.
